Calendula

Updated: Dec 22, 2021

The Calendula, which is also commonly known as Pot Marigold, is a medicinal plant that is often used to heal skin conditions such as burns and rashes. In fact, Calendula is an herb frequently used in diaper rash cream because it is anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory.

Generally, Calendula has many uses from wound healing and controlling bleeding to the treatment of acne and bee stings. It can also act as a digestive remedy.

Recently, Calendula has become popular in the cosmetics industry, as it is said to promote the production of collagen, and protects against oxidative stress which is the cause of premature aging.

Besides being beautiful, the Calendula’s orange and yellow petals are also interestingly edible. The petals can be eaten raw or cooked and add a special flare to egg dishes, such as quiche or they can be tossed into a salad. They are said to taste like saffron and in centuries past, were used as a natural food coloring for butter and cheeses.

Try freezing Calendula petals into ice cubes for your next summer soiree and impress all of your friends!

Calendula is also a fairly easy medicinal plant to cultivate. The name Calendula comes from the Latin word calendae, which refers to the fact that this plant will bloom almost every month of the year. The more that you pick the flowers, the more it will produce new growth and blossom again, assuring you a bountiful harvest.

The uses of Calendula appear to be endless. It seems worthwhile to explore this delightful medicinal plant further.
