Bay Leaf Benefits

Bay leaves are a most versatile medicinal plant. They are considered an herb rather than a spice because they are typically simmered into a dish and then removed prior to serving.

As is the case with many medicinal herbs, bay leaves are also an antioxidant. According to the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, bay leaves may be beneficial in the treatment of Type II Diabetes, and are also an anti-inflammatory.

The antibacterial properties of bay leaves inhibit the growth of both Staphylococcus aureus (the bacteria behind Staph infections) and E. Coli. It is also reported that consuming bay leaves may boost the effects of anti-cancer medications, aid digestion, and even reverse hair loss.

As a Cuban, I can state that bay leaves are a staple in our cooking. It is used in meat dishes that are braised or roasted such as Ropa Vieja (Flank steak braised in a tomato based sauce) or Pernil (Roasted Pork.) Bay leaves are also used to add savory flavor to Black Beans, another Cuban favorite.

To improve your health while eating well is a win-win.
