Ginkgo - The Living Fossil

The ginkgo tree is one of the oldest tree species and a key herb in Chinese medicine, thereby making it a very popular herbal remedy in both Asia and in Cuba. The seeds from the ginkgo have been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for thousands of years and the ginkgo tree itself, a native of China may have originated 200 million years ago. Individual ginkgo trees have been known to live for over 3,000 years. It has been referred to as a “living fossil”.


In Chinese culture, the ginkgo is seen as a manifestation of the sacred concept of yin and yang and a symbol of longevity and vitality. Daoist shamans were known to engrave their magical spells and seals on old growth ginkgo wood in order to communicate with the spirit world.


So what, if any are the health benefits of consuming ginkgo? Ginkgo is said to reduce inflammation and improve circulation to multiple parts of the body including the brain. A study has shown it to reduce anxiety and depression in some patients. The improvement of blood circulation in the body appears to be valuable in the treatment of various illnesses.
