Prickly Pear Cactus produces large, flat, fleshy pads that can be easily grilled for an interesting side dish. The pads are called nopales. The freshest nopales will be small and bright green and have a flavor similar to green beans or asparagus. Nopales Asados (Grilled Cactus) is very simple to prepare for your next BBQ by using the following steps:
Carefully remove the spines and the tougher edges of each pad by using a paring knife.
If you have chosen fresh nopales, it is not necessary to remove the skin.
Brush each side with olive oil and a squeeze of lime juice before seasoning with salt and pepper to taste.
