Although cannabis use is tremendously stigmatized and has not been legal in Japan since 1948, it was cultivated as early as 10,000 years ago. Probably imported from China, cannabis seeds have been discovered in prehistoric sites on the southern island of Kyushu, Japan.
A cave painting from Kyushu Island, Japan dates from the Jomon Period (14,000 to 300 BC). The Neolithic painting depicts tall stalks with hemp-shaped leaves and is thought to be the earliest artwork in Japan.
