There are many stories surrounding Yeay Mao, the mythical heroine whose shrine
protects travelers in Cambodia.
She is said to have led Cambodian armies as the Supreme Commander in their war against the Thai. She brought peace to her kingdom and her name was recorded in the list of the 12 Khmer supreme army commanders. As a token of respect and admiration after her death, her soldiers decided to cut off their penises in offer to Mao as a show of gratitude.
For many years, worshippers offered artificial penises made of wood or concrete to the shrine. After the penis count reached 7000, it was reported that Yeay Mao has now become a nun and no longer accepts phallic offerings.
