Mangos and Cannabis

Why is it said that eating a mango before smoking enhances the high?

Plants produce terpenes, a naturally occurring aromatic oil that aids in producing their fragrance, attracting pollinators, and in repelling insects.

Myrcene is a type of terpene that is found in hops which is used in the production of beer, in mangos and in cannabis. When consumed into the body, terpenes can produce sensations that are mood lifting.

The high levels of myrcene terpenes that are found in mangos are said to open a pathway as they cross the blood-brain barrier. The combination of the terpenes contained in the mango and in the cannabis create what is referred to as the “entourage effect”.

According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, the blending of terpenes with cannabinoids provides medicinal benefits in the treatment of mood and anxiety disorders.

Further research should create opportunities for more patients to be able to avail themselves of these benefits.
