While most of our focus here on our blog is the medicinal plants that have long been in use in Cuba, we would be remiss if we did not mention Moringa Oleifera. The Moringa Oleifera is a superfood that is native to India where it has been used for centuries. It’s medicinal properties and health benefits are well known. It has even been used to purify water.
The Moringa, or Drumstick Tree has captured the world’s attention and its cultivation has recently become popular in Cuba due to the mild subtropical climate.
Moringa Oleifera is very nutritious and contains high levels of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. One serving of Moringa has more Vitamin C than that of 7 oranges! Even the late Fidel Castro once said that this plant had restored his health.
Because most parts of the Moringa Oleifera plant are consumed including its leaves and bark, it is sometimes called a Miracle Tree. The seed pods can be prepared much like asparagus or green beans and the fresh Moringa leaves can be added to smoothies, soups or salads.
I plan on including Moringa tea in my daily diet. What do you use Moringa Oleifera for?
