One of the most popular medicinal plants used in the country of Morocco is rosemary, a shrub with fragrant, evergreen, needle-like leaves and which is native to the Mediterranean region.

In a country such as Morocco where 80% of the population frequently chooses a traditional medicinal practitioner over the medical system, herbalists play a vital role. While modern health care is available to most people, at least a quarter of the population relies exclusively on traditional medicine to treat diseases.

According to The National Center for Biotechnology Information, rosemary collected from Marrakesh and El Jadida was tested and found to contain a remarkable amount of carnosol and carnosic acid, known for its antioxidant and anti-tumoral properties. The Moroccan rosemary plants could be interesting for the development of new drugs that are effective against cancer.
