The use of medicinal plants for healing has continued to rise in popularity as the price of prescription drugs increases. Even at the dawn of the 21st century, 11% of the 252 drugs that are considered basic and essential by the World Health Organization originate with flowering plants.
Over the centuries cannabis has been used for its pain relieving benefits but is still classified as an illegal substance federally in the US. So, we must turn to alternatives for pain relief.
While it may seem questionable to ingest medicinal plants due to their not being recognized by the Food and Drug Administration, there are many herbs which have been studied extensively and are considered safe choices.
One of these herbs is turmeric. Turmeric is an herb that has been in use in India as an anti-inflammatory for thousands of years. Studies have shown turmeric to have pain reducing power equal to that of prescription and over-the-counter medications in some cases. It has been useful in improving symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and inflammation.
Turmeric can be taken as a supplement, ground from a fresh turmeric root, or used as a powdered spice to season your meal.
