Why Are Medicinal Herbs Important In Cuba?

In Cuba, it is not unusual to see 5 to 7 different medicinal herbs being grown in a family’s backyard. The most popular plants are mint, chamomile or manzanilla, aloe vera and moringa.

In the 1990’s, the US embargo made access to typical medicines quite limited in Cuba. Homeopathic treatment options from Africa, Asia and Europe were beginning to be taught in Cuban medical schools. In many cases, alternative medicine is preferred by both the patient and the doctor as there are often less complications to deal with.

Medicinal herbs are also being farmed on the island for further processing by medicinal labs who later distribute them to patients. All of the farming is done organically.

The unique combination of the use of medicinal herbs and conventional medicines has contributed to Cuba having one of the highest life expectancy rates compared to most developing countries. The life expectancy in Cuba for 2021 is 78.98 years.

Medicinal herbs may be helpful in adding years to your life too.
