Yin and Yang

The ancient Chinese, being the earliest adopters of the hemp plant for food, medicine and clothing, also used it in their art.

This portrait of Nuwa and Fuxi or Yin and Yang, was discovered in a Tang Dynasty (Mid 8th Century) tomb along the Silk Road in today’s Xinjiang Province.

According to Chinese mythology, Chinese people were created by the goddess Nuwa while her brother Fuxi was the creator of Chinese culture. They are the earliest ancestors of the human race. When Nuwa and Fux appear together in classic Chinese artwork, they are always in this position with Nuwa holding a compass and Fuxi carrying a square.

The couple are surrounded by the Big Dipper and other major constellations. The entangled tails of the couple look very much like the double helix of DNA.
